Our Story
A Legacy of Care in
Dorchester County
For over four decades, Dorchester Seniors, Inc. (DSI) has been the heartbeat of support for the aging population in our county. What began as a small initiative to provide basic social services has blossomed into a multi-center organization that serves as a lifeline for thousands of residents every year.
Our story is one of transformation—moving from simply providing a place to go, to creating a place to thrive.
How We Began
In 1979, the Dorchester County Government recognized a growing need for dedicated social services for older adults. The Dorchester Human Development Board was established to bridge this gap, ensuring that our seniors were never forgotten.
As our community grew, so did our vision. In 2004, we officially became Dorchester Seniors, Inc., a private 501(c)3 non-profit. This change allowed us to expand our reach, partner with national organizations, and tailor our programs to the specific needs of Summerville, St. George, and the surrounding rural areas.
Our Two Pillars: Summerville & St. George
We are proud to operate two state-of-the-art centers that serve as the foundation of our work:
Faith Sellers Senior Center (Summerville):
Originally the Dorchester County Senior Center, it was renamed in 2005 to honor Mrs. Faith Sellers. Her decades of tireless advocacy made the dream of a large, multi-purpose senior center a reality. Today, it stands as an award-winning hub for fitness, arts, and social connection.

David Sojourner Senior Center (St. George):
Opened in 2002, this center is named after the former Mayor of St. George, David Sojourner. His dedication to the residents of Upper Dorchester County ensured that those in rural areas have the same access to nutrition, health, and community as those in the city.

Mission & Vision
Our Mission: To provide opportunities to all senior citizens of Dorchester County to enhance their educational, mental, social, spiritual, and physical well-being.
Our Vision: A Dorchester County where adults 50+ are empowered to achieve their highest quality of life.

Our history isn’t just about buildings and dates; it’s about the people. It’s about the volunteers who deliver meals in the rain, the staff who lead with a smile, and the members who find a second family in our halls.
